Industrial Production of Cloth Face Coverings
Increasing access to protective face coverings is crucial in the coronavirus pandemic. Wearing face masks has also been recommended by the CDC for the general public. Yale faculty members from chemical & environmental engineering and mechanical engineering & materials science are working with a Yale alum at the New Haven biotech startup Biorez and engineers at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to provide information on the production of non-certified face masks and their varying levels of particle entrapment. The team conducts engineering analyses to discern the pros and cons of different types of materials and methods for such masks. Their study includes, for instance, creating math models that show what percentage of particles would be filtered out by a specific mask.
